The refurbishment work commenced in 2011 with the primary objective of restoring the historic structure while transforming the surrounding area into a location that would be attractive to local residents and tourists. The renovations were completed in 2012 with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Army. Additionally, two underutilized buildings on Chatham Street were also refurbished and converted for commercial use.
